Strength & Conditioning is for Every Body

5 benefits of strength and conditioning

The phrase strength & conditioning is becoming more common outside of the sports world. But did you know that it can benefit everybody?

What is strength & conditioning?

Strength & conditioning is a form of programming designed to optimize an athlete’s performance. It combines various types of training and typically includes strength training, agility training, cardiorespiratory endurance training, mobility training, and activity-specific training.

What is the difference between strength & conditioning?

Strength is all the work to become stronger (think: resistance training) while conditioning is all the work to improve our cardiorespiratory system (think: cardio or higher rep work that keeps our heart rate elevated).

Whether you’re training for your next sports event or to improve a certain area of your life, strength & conditioning can benefit you!

Here are 5 benefits of strength & conditioning:

  1. Improve heart health. Cardiorespiratory endurance training is an excellent way to improve your cardiorespiratory fitness, which is essentially how well your heart and lungs are doing their job.
  2. Increase or maintain muscle mass. Muscles are vital in everyday activities, so it’s important to preserve as much as we can. Strength training is a great way to keep using the muscle we already have and build more!
  3. Improve mood. Studies show that regular, meaningful movement has been shown to improve mood and decrease stress.
  4. Improve joint mobility and stability. Mobility is the ability to actively take our joints through their full ranges of motion. A combination of mobility and strength training is needed to optimize all of our joints’ mobility and stability!
  5. Improve quality of life. Being able to do the things we love with ease (and pain-free) is important when it comes to our quality of life. Strength & conditioning helps us incorporate activity-specific training so we can continue to do the things we love most!

If your overall health is a piggy bank, imagine that each of the benefits above is a coin. Each of them contributes to filling your piggy bank, and in turn improves your overall health!
